They’ve always been the most important thing for me because, with metal and horror, the fans aren’t just fans – it’s their life, their lifestyle. The first opening band to hit the stage that night was a band out of Las Vegas, Nevada by the name of Otherwise. Otherwise is on the Century Media Records roster of artists and their debut cd "True Love Never Dies" is a highly recommended pickup for any music fan who likes to give their ears a hard and heavy sonic assault of rock riffness that packs a punch mixed with soulful and aggressive melodies to wet your musical appetite.

This band grabbed my attention right from the start of their Cleveland show right up through the end of their high energy set. It's been a long time since a band has come out and grabbed my attention like that and a more proper review will follow in the weeks ahead. Until then head on over to their website Otherwiserock.com and check out what they have to offer. Your ears will thank you in the weeks ahead.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3863837618875044922.post-35914427955498515342013-08-22T07:45:00.001-07:002013-08-22T07:49:31.112-07:00SiriusXM Presents Metallica Live at the Apollo Theater

Stryper is one of the top Christian rock bands of all time. Comprised of the original line-up of Michael Sweet (lead vocals/guitar), Tim Gaines (bass), Robert Sweet (drums) and Oz Fox (guitar), Stryper has been going strong since 1984, and is responsible for such '80s metal classic albums as SOLDIERS UNDER COMMAND, TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL, IN GOD WE TRUST and such MTV hit singles/videos as "Calling on You," "Free" and "Honestly." After a sabbatical for much of the 1990's, Stryper returned strong in the early 21st century. To date, the band has sold upwards of 10 million records worldwide and is a Dove Award-winner and GRAMMY nominee. Stryper is the first band to have two songs in MTV's Top 10 simultaneously.
Candlelight Red are rising fast within the ranks of bands that specialize in
hard rock with killer hooks, as evidenced by their latest release,
'Reclamation,' and the new single/video, "Feel the Same." Directed by Wade
Spencer and shot while the band was on tour earlier this summer, the clip
continues the band's winning tradition of striking music videos, which showcases
the excitement of their live show but shows Candlelight Red on the road behind

Hailing from Williamsport, PA, and comprised of Ryan Hoke - lead vocals, Jeremy
Edge - guitar/backing vocals, Jamie Morral- bass/backing vocals, and Tanner
Wayne - drums, Edge recently offered his thoughts on the "Feel the Same" video.
"Since this is a much mellower tune for us, we thought it would be cool to give
fans a glimpse of life on tour as well as the sacrifices we all make to be away
from family and friends to go out and do what we love most...travel over the
country playing music and trying to win over new fans!"

'Reclamation' was issued on June 4^th, and was produced by Sevendust's Morgan
Rose and recorded at Architekt Studios in Butler,NJ. Taking over drum duties is
Tanner Wayne, who replaced Brian Dugan (due to family obligations). Wayne
previously was a member of the bands Chiodos and Scary Kids Scaring Kids, and
has toured with LMFAO, Underoath, and Emmure.

Multinational melodic metallers EDEN’S CURSE are delighted to announce their new line up. Ending ten months of speculation after an arduous audition process, the band are proud to announce Serbian vocalist Nikola Mijic as their new front man. The introducing video can be viewed here:<a href="http://www.rockngrowl.com/?email_id=126&user_id=527&urlpassed=aHR0cDovL3lvdXR1LmJlL0Vwamk5ZjVsS3pz&controller=stats&action=analyse&wysija-page=1&wysijap=subscriptions" style="background-color: #b3b3b3; border: 0px currentColor; color: rgb(0, 0, 255) !important; font-family: "Tahoma"; font-size: 13px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank"> http://youtu.be/Epji9f5lKzs

Hailing from Senta, in the North of Serbia, Nikola is a vastly experienced singer despite his tender years. For the past ten years he has been fronting Serbian outfit Alogia and more recently Hungarian Prog Rockers Dreyelands, who released their debut album on Lion Music in 2010. In 2008 he also featured heavily on the Prog Rock project album Expedition Delta.

A happy Nikola said “I’m really honored to be part of the Metal journey of Eden’s Curse with their new upcoming album that is coming out on 4th October and I’m looking forward to rock with you guys“!

<div style="background-color: #b3b3b3; border: 0px currentColor; color: rgb(0, 0, 0) !important; font-family: "Tahoma"; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em; padding: 3px 0px 0px; vertical-align: top; word-wrap: break-word;">
Drummer Pete Newdeck commented “For me, when I heard a lot of the auditions, Nik’s was the one that stood out. It stood out mainly because of it’s originality. His voice was strong, it was soulful and he had something different to offer. That’s really why I championed him because I think he could offer something different, change the face of the band and possibly help this band move forward“.

<div style="background-color: #b3b3b3; border: 0px currentColor; color: rgb(0, 0, 0) !important; font-family: "Tahoma"; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em; padding: 3px 0px 0px; vertical-align: top; word-wrap: break-word;">
Bassist Paul Logue added “When Nik sent his audition of Evil & Divine that’s when we really began to sit up and take notice and say that this guy was something special. He is the complete package“.

<div style="background-color: #b3b3b3; border: 0px currentColor; color: rgb(0, 0, 0) !important; font-family: "Tahoma"; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em; padding: 3px 0px 0px; vertical-align: top; word-wrap: break-word;">
Guitarist Thorsten Koehne enthused “He’s just an amazing talent, one of the most amazing singers I’ve seen in recent times. He’s just so versatile in what he can do and he just fits the band perfect because with Eden’s Curse we’re very diverse, as far as the music, so there’s not just one particular style that we are doing. So we were really looking for a singer that could keep up with that and have a range in his vocals. Nikola is just perfect because he can do so many things, from blues to metal stuff and everything in between“.

<div style="background-color: #b3b3b3; border: 0px currentColor; color: rgb(0, 0, 0) !important; font-family: "Tahoma"; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em; padding: 3px 0px 0px; vertical-align: top; word-wrap: break-word;">
Also joining the EDEN’S CURSE ranks is Welsh keyboard wizard and Powerquest main man Steve Williams who replaces Alessandro Del Vecchio.

<div style="background-color: #b3b3b3; border: 0px currentColor; color: rgb(0, 0, 0) !important; font-family: "Tahoma"; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em; padding: 3px 0px 0px; vertical-align: top; word-wrap: break-word;">
Bassist Paul Logue commented “Sadly we we part company with our brother Alessandro on a truly positive note as his career as a mixing engineer and a producer has really taken off, meaning less and less time could be devoted to the Eden’s Curse cause. We will miss him dearly as a friend and a musician and we wish him nothing but the utmost success. We firmly believe he has the talent to go right to the very top! He will always be considered a part of the Eden’s Curse family and is cursed for life“.

<div style="background-color: #b3b3b3; border: 0px currentColor; color: rgb(0, 0, 0) !important; font-family: "Tahoma"; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.5em; padding: 3px 0px 0px; vertical-align: top; word-wrap: break-word;">
Williams, a former member of Dragonforce, commented “It was a real thrill to be asked by Paul and the boys to get involved in Eden’s Curse. I’ve been a fan for a long time, I’ve known the guys a while and it’s great to be here getting myself right cursed I can tell you“!

Musically, "Black Ribbons" is a continuation of some of the cosmic rock material he has sprinkled in on some of his previous releases. "Black Ribbons" is a concept release that follows late night talk show host Will 'O The Wisp, who is narrarated by Stephen King, on his last broadcast as the nation sits in a police state and the public airwaves are about to be silenced. He is the voice of the movement of the resistance and for his last broadcast he chooses to play music from the exiled band Hierophant with the presmise of injecting a ray of light or hope for the resistance. But will it come at a price???.

Shooter checked in from the road to talk a little bit about "Black Ribbons". The next stop on the tour is on Tuesday Oct. 5 at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio. Information for that show and remaining dates is down below.

Mydenrocks: What was the genesis or the initial spark to tackle the conceptional theme behind "Black Ribbons"?
Shooter Jennings: I'll tell you how it kind of came about. It started with me leaving my other label and kind of cutting my ties with Nashville. I had been starting to work on some music. I had some very weird periods of time that I kind of emotionally went through. "Black Ribbons" was one of the songs I wrote back then. I was angry. There were other times I was like ambivalent. It just kind of went through different phases. I had knew I was going to experiment in the studio and just see what came out.....kind of with the original intention of going in because even though I had some ideas about songs and stuff I knew they would kind of take a different shape once I started working on it. I had always had this idea that I wanted to tie a record together with a voice. It kind of actually came...funny enough...one time we were on tour and that show "City Confidential" came on. It had Paul Winfield, who is dead now. I thought "this guy's voice was so cool sounding and wouldn't be cool if a record had a voice like that tying it together." That was kind of like the initial spark of it. Then as I was out on the road I was writing stuff. I wroted the "The Illuminated" in a weird moment of...kind of...I guess at that point...I can't remember where that falls into the actual time scale because that I know once I left New York and I was going to relocate my family to L.A. we drove cross country...and I am a huge Coast to Coast fan...and we were driving 6,7 days and I was driving the whole way...up late at night and listening to Coast to Coast and other radio programs. A day into that trip is when the whole economy collapsed...Lehman Brothers and all that shit happened and just all fell apart. Those kind of talk radio programs were just lit up with that kind of stuff. People like David Icke, crazy writers, philosphers, and political people and whatnot all over the place talking about all kinds of stuff - the impending elections, police state talk, conspiracy talk, etc.. All this stuff and it just really kind of freaked me out. But, it also made me really appreciative of what I had, my family, kind of where I was at...all of that kind of compounded into this feeling after I got to L.A. I started doing alot of research and reading alot of books on the "off" days and going to the studio on the "on" days and started constructing this idea. We went into the studio - me and Dave Cobb for about 6 months and really worked out the music or the landscape musically of the record and songs that I was working on. Some songs we created from scratch depending on what the record felt like it needed. As it went along I was researching and forming opinions and goals and things about the record...and it just kind of all came together in a way. It was really weird. Like the fact that I was writing it for a fictional band - I had that idea in my mind the whole time...trying to figure out band names and stuff. At the same time it completely freed me up from thinking about like what my next record was to be....It was all generated by the story and came together as this really pure project. It was just me and my close friends and family that was around when I was doing it. So it was this really pure experience.

M: Was it a conscious decision to lean the music towards a more "cosmic" rock direction on "Black Ribbons"?
SJ: I love that stuff. I definately lean towards all these influences and things sonically of how I want to sound. I wanted to blend all these different kind of things like rock and different types of music together. This is always something that I have done. Even on the old records like a song like "Bad Magick" where it would be like ... really out there and kind of psychedlic or droney. I love that stuff. This was an opportunity to just run with that inside of my personality and make a whole record of it.

M: Since you've came on the scene, I've enjoyed how you stick to the formula of pretty much putting out an album an year old school style,
SJ: I have. This was the biggest gap though we've had though. It was 3 years for "Black Ribbons" because it was the end of 2007 when "The Wolf" came out. We hadn't put a record out except that for that "Bad Magick" collection that the label put out. That had nothing to do with me. The "Waylon Forever" one came out too in the interim. We had been done with that one for a long time - since '06. It took a long time to get a deal in place to get it out. We're trying to pad away to go and start recording another record right now. I can't too stale on myself. I have to keep in motion. It feels crazy to stop after you do something.

M: Shed a little light on the "Living Album" project you have
SJ: We've recorded a bunch of shows and they're on this "Living Album" thing that we're selling. It's a USB of "Black Ribbons" that has this link that through the internet gives you access to all these shows that we played and recorded. I think there's 15 on there right now and we're planning on recording the Nashville show coming up. You can get it on our website or at the shows.

M: How did you get Stephen King involved to do the Will 'O The Wisp part?
SJ: He was the first person that popped into my mind. What happened is that I just had a feeling because I knew he was a fan. He had written some nice things about our records in his Entertainment Weekly column and he actually wrote my name in one of his book, which was actually kind of a weird thing. I reached out to him. I couldn't get him forever. So, I was doing an interview with this nice lady at EW online - someone who worked there passed a note to him and he wrote me back immediately. He was like "I'm a fan (and all this stuff), but I'm really, really busy right now so I don't know if I'm going to be able to do this"...because of the way I described it. It was really hard to describe to someone. He said "If you're not too discouraged, still send me something." So I sent him a 3/4 finished record...some instrumental tracks and he was actually missing some songs at that point. It was just a taste of it. He was like "Whoa! This is a dynamite record! There's definately no Waylon or McMurtry here. I was like "I know. I know. I know it's crazy." He said he was interested and we kept talking. We never spoke or met. It was all email. We still haven't met or spoke. It's been all email interaction and sending stuff in the mail. One day I had written him a little script. I was having a little hard time describing it to him because I kept saying dj and that was the first mistake because he's not really a dj. He's like a talk radio personality. More of like a late night day and taking calls or whatever. So I wrote this little mock script up one day describing the vibe of what I was imagining and sent it to him. He took that...all the names and stuff...he used all of it and made it a way better script out of it. It turned out really good.

M: So Stephen did the recording himself? He captured that vibe pretty good.
SJ: He did it all and sent it to me. I got it in the mail one day - a cd, a transcript of it, and a picture of him in the studio sitting at the board in a Maine sweatshirt. I heard it the first time in the house alone for the first time. I was in my pajamas and I put it on...sat there and just listened to him do it alone. I was like "Holy shit! This is a trip because I couldn't believe it came together." because I thought I was going to have to chop it up and piece it together. I just couldn't believe how it came out. I had this music that I had made like a year before on my computer. I'm a big sci-fi fan. Blade Runner is like my favorite movie of all time. Vangelis did the soundtrack. That was one of the coolest soundtracks and set the bar for the sci-fi soundtracks. I was kind of creating some music like that. I had made that on my garage bands playing the computer keys on the keyboard. I had that music set aside. So I was alright "I'm going to use this for his background music". I just felt like it was the perfect vibe - spacey, out there, and dark. The chord progression in that section I then wrote it in to "Everything Else is Illusion" and "Triskadekaphobia". They both have those progressions going on behind Will 'O The Wisp so it was kind of a cool reocurring theme thing.

M: Especially the ending....(you'll have to listen to "Black Ribbons" to find out)
SJ: That was his idea. I loved it. You start to like the guy alot throughout the record so when that happens it kind of sets you up for a fall. His charisma really made that happen.

M: Since these songs were written at different times, was it tough to piece together the songs and storyline on the cd to make it all work as one concept theme?
SJ: It kind of really grew from the outside out. For real. It really did. There were moments where it was crazy. For instance, one of the toughest decisions of a record is the order. I had to figure out the band name and the order...and all of it...halfway through the creation of the record so that Stephen King could do his parts. So, I had to have the whole thing solidified pretty much by the time that Stephen King was going to do it. That was like a rush. I sat up all night one night with my lady Drea (de Matteo) and our friend Ginger Gonzalex, who lives with us out there in L.A. We sat up all night ordering this record correctly and the right way. I didn't want the whole record to be politico kind of songs. It needed to just be sprinkled in there to go in conjuction with Stephen King because he was/is playing shit across their entire catalog....in theory. So I knew nothing had to sound like they were off the same record. Nothing had to be that cohesive musically. But, there had to be the songs that he was going to introduce to kind of set up the theme of the record in a way. There was definately alot of calculating that went on.

M: This is a concept that really isn't that far fetched from reality.
SJ: I wanted it to be not too far in the future. I wanted to stay way far away from all the 2112 b.s. What am I talking about 2112? I'm mean 2012. That's a great record though! (laughing) I was thinking that this could be right around the corner...a police state is declared and they could take over. That was another thing. There were things that I had written in and used in the script that I had cut out...little comments like an early intro where he originally said something about curfews being instated. I was like...you know what? If these people are living in these times, everyone is well aware that there is curfews. So we took that out. There were things that I wanted to do so that it was really vague and realistic for someone in that time.

M: Do you think that musically, with "Black Ribbons", you're finding this might be the "Shooter Jennings" sound from here on out?
SJ: If I really had it my way, I would have done it without any music. You know what I mean? In a way, it was the Will 'O The Wisp part about this record that was so captivating to me that had this late night experience. To capture that feeling that I had in the car that night. That kind of a feeling is cool as hell to me. I loved the "War of the Worlds" thing when they did that and I love old radio theater...all the shows and stuff. I feel that every step of the way I've been 100 percent...my heart has been in every bit of music that I've put out there. I feel that I'm growing as a person. I'm a dad now. I'm turning into or becoming my own human being and coming to terms with who I am in alot of ways. This record was opening doors for me and is a reflection of that.

M: What would your dad think of the record?
SJ: I think he would love it for sure. He would definatley be like "Man! You put some thought into this". He had the same policital views that I have. Do the right thing was his thing. Whoever did the right thing I think he would get behind.

M: What can someone who has never been to a Shooter Jennings show expect?
SJ: A pretty awesome balls to the wall set that has most of the new record. We alternate out a couple of songs. There's some of the old stuff and even some new stuff we've been kicking around in there. It's been acutally one of those tours where we've been working up new songs and evolving the entire experience. I feel like we're really hitting a groove finally.

M: ...and what would you do to convince someone who doesn't know Shooter Jennings to buy the new record?
SJ: It's got Stephen King on it! (laughing) Seriously. It's hard to explain the record to people. The people that know me really well, wrote me and said this record was so me. So, just trust me. You'll like it.

M: Is there any charities or causes you like to plug?
SJ: I have two things - diabetes research because that's why my dad died and that's something that he would want. The other thing is the Iraq war vets. They're coming back and it's tough or going to be tough for them.
Paul Gilbert & Freddie Nelson
UNITED STATES
Mascot Records

Take Freddie Nelson (Too Tall Jones) and Paul Gilbert (Racer X, Mr. Big) - mix and shake them up and out spits one sparkling release titled UNITED STATES. UNITED STATES is a collection of well crafted songs that are spit, polished, and shined to perfection.

When this cd arrived at my doorstep, I looked at the cover and knew right away that this cd was going to be something special. Why you ask? Well...not only because Paul Gilbert shows up, but because Paul shares the spotlight with Freddie Nelson - both of whom cut their teeth in the South West PA and South East Ohio music scenes. I've let this cd sink in for a few weeks now and in the meantime have been reading some early reviews on UNITED STATES. Needless to say, I'm a little disappointed that in nearly every review or interview I've read the one big question is "Who is Freddie Nelson?". I partially blame this on the internet age - there is simply too many bands or musicians out there and it's way too much for any one person to digest. I first came across Freddie and his band Too Tall Jones back in 2001 gracing the stage of the Varsity Club in Youngstown, Ohio. Too Tall Jones released a brilliant cd called BI-POLAR that was chock full of catchy power pop rock songs that's stayed in a pretty good rotation with myself since then. What Too Tall Jones showed me was that Freddie Nelson knew how to write some good power pop rock songs full of hooks and melody - and most importantly his songs have stuck with me for a few years now. That's a recipe for success in my book.

With Freddie's musical influence in mind, in comes Paul Gilbert's stellar guitar playing. (I'm not going to go into details of Paul Gilbert's history because anyone who is a music fan should know him by now. If not, shame on you!) That's a pretty damn good formula for some good songs. Together they can take a song to another level. Maybe another angle to look at it is that you can have a well written song, but if the players aren't up to par the end result would be a song that comes out flat or average and makes the song nothing more than a throw away track. It wouldn't have that "Added X" ingredient. With Gilbert and Nelson you get that "Added X" ingredient which is the icing on the cake.

With it's jackhammer/thumping beat during the verses, the opening track "The Last Rock and Roll Star" is an adrenalin rush that gets the blood pumping. Killer guitar solo on this one as well. "Hideaway" has a swaggering or swaying feel to it. Mid tempo song that is driven home by the vocal delivery. "Waste of Time" - good rock song that sees Freddie Nelson delivering his vocals in the Freddie Mercury zone - a few select higher range lines might have you thinking along the lines of something that The Darkness might have done. Don't confuse this song as a Darkness clone song though - I just wanted to highlight those few lines here and there to give you an idea of the high range of Freddie's voice. "Bad Times Good" is a flat out foot tapping pop song. No bells and whistles here - just a good strait beat. Simple and good. "Paris Hilton Look-Alike" is a melodic song that's full of harmony. Slower tempo, but has that head bobbing beat to it. Kind of a song that I would describe as "in the goove". "Pulsar" is a hard hitting song with some funky guitar work. The funk gets funkier on the intro and breaks on "Girl From Omaha". Stretch a rubber band across your fingers plug into a distortion box and give it a few fast plucks. That's the funky sound I'm trying to describe here. That quickly gives way to a jumping song with a pop flavor to it.

It's pretty tough to break down each individual song and trying to touch on everything in each song. There are a number of elements though that are strong with each song that carries through the whole disc. One is the guitar playing. Great rhythm work and great solos are numerous on here, which makes the music catchy. As I said above, Freddie has a unique style of singing that I like and that's featured throughout the disc as well. I think what I like most about his style is that he doesn't have the same delivery throughout a song. One moment he may be singing a melody line, another moment he might be one step below shouting, and then another part he might have a rapid fire approach - almost like a song is a book and each little segment where he changes it up is a chapter within that book. Bottom line is that's what creates a lot of the hooks on here. They catch your ear and that's the name of the game.

I'm glad I stumbled across Too Tall Jones years ago. That laid a nice foundation in advance of UNITED STATES so I somewhat knew what I was getting before I heard it. I described Too Tall Jones as catchy power pop rock songs and that's what you get with Gilbert & Nelson's UNITED STATES. I get a real heavy influence of Freddie Nelson on UNITED STATES. For sake of comparison...and nothing against Paul Gilbert because his guitar work shines on this disc.....I would say this leans a little more to sounding like a Too Tall Jones disc and little less of any Paul Gilbert's previous band recordings. At any rate, it's pretty damn good and that's the bottom line. There must have been something in the water around the Pittsburgh, PA area when Paul and Freddie grew up because it's pretty obvious they know how to write a good song. Classic rock and late 80's rock fans will eat this up. Modern rock fans might want to give it a test drive as well. I think UNITED STATES may rise above the never ending onslaught of new releases and grow some legs to stand atop the pack as one of the best releases of 2009 - maybe not a number 1, but definately should enter the minds of people when looking back at the best releases of 2009. Definately pick add UNITED STATES to your collection and don't hesitate to dig into both Paul Gilbert's and Freddie Nelson's back catalog.
We'll get to a proper review of it in the next few days. However, this release has some roots in my cd collection and not from Paul Gilbert (although he is in there.). .....That root would be the band Too Tall Jones, which was led by Freddie Nelson.

I stumbled upon Too Tall Jones the "old school" way by seeing them open up for L.A. Guns at the Varsity Club in Youngstown, Ohio back in May of 2001. It would be the first of 2 times that year L.A. Guns turned me on to a great new band. The next time L.A. Guns came through Ohio they had another great band open up for them - The Mimsies. Sadly, that band is no longer around and that little firecracker of a singer Casey is no longer involved in music. If you're looking for 2 really good releases, track yourself down a copy of Too Tall Jones' BI-POLAR and The Mimsies' TRASH AND ROCK AND ROLL. It's been 8 years since I've picked up these discs and I STILL play them on a somewhat regular basis. Good stuff!

If you like well written melodic rock, you'll love BI-POLAR. It has a nod to old school 80's rock, yet with a sound that was fresh for the new millenium. It's completey loaded with catchy songs and musical hooks that will snag your ear. What are you waiting for? Start typing away and see if you can find anything on Too Tall Jones. I think you'll like it. I know I do. You can find the cd here or download "You Ain't Nothing" and give it a spin to see if it wets your appetite.

I think I reviewed both of these discs back then. I'll have to dig up my old reviews and see if I have them. If not, maybe this would make for a good "retro" review piece.

Happy Hunting!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3863837618875044922.post-54046006395724414542009-05-08T09:16:00.000-07:002009-05-08T09:26:55.462-07:00Evanscapps The Last TimeDue to the sudden passing of Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist, I thought I would share a review of his Evanscapps cd, which came out a few years ago. It was a project he shared with Bobby Capps of .38 Special.

EvansCapps - THE LAST TIME

Evanscapps
THE LAST TIME

I love it when a release comes my way, where literally every song on the release is good. Such is the case from a somewhat unknown band called Evanscapps. With no label support, they created a gem titled THE LAST TIME. To best categorize the sound that Evanscapps produces, imagine the buzz like sound of Alice in Chains with someone like Scott Weiland singing. The end result is a sound consisting of raw, crunchy riffs, heavy rhythms, and singing that has a “take no prisoners” approach.

THE LAST TIME starts off with the blistering “Hell If I Know”. The music comes at you full throttle. Mix in the catchy lyrics and you have a recipe for a song that may land you a speeding ticket.

There are a number of songs on here that have a lot of good heavy grooves. A few of which are “Dead Is Rising”, the swaggering “Follow the Morning Sun” and “Walk” At times, the singer fires off lines fast paced – much in the way of how Kid Rock does it. Especially, on “Walk” and “Mississippi”. “Mississippi” also has a Rage Against the Machine sounding rhythm to it. The guitar hook on “Walk” will grab your attention with the Alice in Chains feel it provokes for those few seconds.

Evanscapps can slow it down a notch or two as well. On these songs, they are still “in your face” – just tuned down a notch. Such is the case with the moody “Innocence” and the atmospheric “Stand or Fall”. On “For Somethin’ or Nothin’”, the tempo is slowed down a bit and hits you with a punch when the verses come around. This song sounds like it could be a big commercial radio hit.

The singer employs the use of a voice box throughout the disc and this is where the Scott Weiland reference comes in. That’s something that Weiland employs frequently and it works well for this singer as well. The style of singing is also mixed up on THE LAST TIME – no two songs sound alike. The lyrical content is perfect for each song with well thought provoking lyrics that really convey the mood of the music. Some slick guitar playing is featured throughout the entire disc. Imagine a chained up/drool-dripping dog that’s just been unleashed and that paints a picture of the guitar frenzy that spews out of the speakers. Crunchy rhythms and leads that are dead on and not overdone are abundant. Mix that with the singing and everything comes out sounding fresh, original, and unique.

So now you’re probably wondering “Who are these guys?” Grab a chair and sit down. Here’s the surprise. At the beginning of the review, I put “somewhat unknown band”. Well, the fact is that they are pretty well known members of their respective “other” bands - .38 Special and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Bobby Capps steps out from behind the keyboards, as a member of .38 Special, to provide the singing duties. Laying down his bass from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ean Evans picks up his guitar and whips his lead guitar playing into a sonic assault on the ears. Both Bobby and Ean are the driving force behind Evanscapps. Combined, they share a common bond of enjoying all styles of music. They are still very dedicated to their respective bands and those bands are their main priority. For the time being, Evanscapps is a side project that provides an avenue for their creative outlets. In this case, showcasing the side of them that loves heavy music. They also enlisted a few other well-known musicians to help out with the project. Todd Harrell (3 Doors Down), Rickey Medlocke (Lynyrd Sknyrd, Blackfoot), and Todde Lawton (Toby Mac) all contributed to the recording of THE LAST TIME.

I’m hearing at least 5 or 6 radio hits on here. If THE LAST TIME gets the exposure of say a Velvet Revolver, look out because this thing will take off. The reason I say Velvet Revolver is because that song for song, THE LAST TIME has a certain freshness to it much like Velvet Revolver – only better. It’s all about the songs and there are 11 great ones on here!

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to www.evanscapps.com and pick yourself up a copy of THE LAST TIME. For those that like regular mail, I’ve listed that information below as well. Trust me – you won’t be disappointed. Now I know a lot of you are probably thinking, “this writer is really sucking up and not critiquing it.” I would think the same thing myself if I was reading this. Just to clarify – I’m not blowing smoke. THE LAST TIME is a refreshing oasis in the middle of a scorched desert of music mediocrity. There really is nothing on here that I didn’t like. When the dust settles from this year’s onslaught of new releases, this one will fall into a few top 10 lists. Great release!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3863837618875044922.post-48550973491852007562009-05-06T14:31:00.000-07:002009-05-06T14:35:30.387-07:00UFO - The Visitor<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs-kN8QeVGV74Tn9QexlAeFPhph4bMfEoPs906OhseNfy5PauFCQ4hKtkVCGQbadn0d_GRViHft_0FLrJ1tOcFd3LLNXywrHQbA6MiV6QLZPCFGHhQsWLRzOwahkV4A6z8Qu7kAAYmPDI/s200/UFO+-+The+Visitor+CD+Cover.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332827635559381090" />
UFO
The Visitor
SPV Records

One of my anticipated releases so far for 2009 has been the arrival of UFO's new release THE VISITOR. The reason why I always look forward to a new UFO release is the fact that, with each new release, you get a different "flavor"or style of rock and roll....music that may tilt a little lighter or a little heavier...while still rotating around that trademark UFO sound. Sometimes the songs go down well and sometimes they don't. When you look back at a bands career, you find some releases that may have sucked bad as a whole, but you may have gotten one or two good songs out of the release. That style represented, as a whole, on THE VISITOR is a mid-tempo, bluesy (on the heavy side) style of rock.....no really fast, hard rocking songs stand out such as "Lights Out" or more recently "Fighting Man" off of SHARKS. But, on the other side....it's not heavy on the slow songs either. There's no slow emotionless songs that have been placed on here just for the sake of "Let's put a ballad on THE VISITOR and let's see if it sticks." Mid tempo blues based songs are the overall flavor of THE VISITOR. A more in depth track by track review is in order here. Let's take a look....

1. Saving Me - A twangy guitar intro (which reminds me a lot of the tv show My Name Is Earl theme) gives way to a mid tempo rhythm that sways in and out of head bobbing mode. The punch of the guitar chords is the backbone of the verses. Singer Phil Mogg comes in and immediately lays his stamp on the song - drawling out the lyrics showing he's still at the top of his game.

2. On The Waterfront - A swaying blue based based mid tempo song oozing with smokey lyrics that stand out. Guitarist Vinnie Moore noodles out some tasteful melodies and not overplaying it. Paul Raymond's keyboard playing (almost sounds like he's playing a Hammond organ) compliments and rounds out the sound of the rest of the instruments.

3. Hell Driver - Here's an up tempo rawker. Nice heavy guitar driven rhythm and blues barn burner cooked up just right. By barn burner I mean heavy on the power side of things - somewhat in the style of "When Daylight Goes To Town" off of YOU ARE HERE. The hard hitting drum beat serves as the backbone of the song.

4. Stop Breaking Down - Nice melodic song with Vinnie Moore and Phil Mogg leaving their mark all over this mid tempo shuffle.

5. Rock Ready - The twangy guitar intro returns again...this time more up tempo (and the intro still sounds like the My Name Is Earl theme - just like the intro to "Saving Me"...just a little bit faster). Real heavy blues sound on the guitar work...maybe some slide work going on? Not sure...but it sounds like it. After the intro, the song kicks into what I would call a foot stompin' blues based boogie shuffle of a song. Good stuff.

6. Living Proof - A moody swampy bluesy middle of the road song. Absolutely awesome guitar solo. I don't know how I like Phil's vocal delivery on parts of the song....it's almost if he's speaking as if he's telling you a secret...especially on the parts where he is singing/speaking the "Shake..Shake..Shake" lines. However his trademark lyrical style is stamped all over the song - envision his smirking smile wiped all over his face while delivering thought invoking lyrics to please your ears. I think I need to let this song sink in a little deeper.

7. Can't Buy A Thrill - A little slower paced melodic song. Not ballad slow though. Kind of a song to listen to while chilling out. It won't raise the blood pressure, but might get you tapping a finger or two.

8. Forsaken - Don't care for this song. A slow song. Being a guitar fan and a fan of the almighty guitar solo...I like the guitar solo and that's about it unfortunately. Nothing else about the song seems to work for me...a lot of loose ends that don't seem to fit anywhere for my ears.

9. Villians & Thieves - Here we go. A heavy chugging guitar accompanied by classic Phil lyrics and vocals drives the song home. Paul Raymond stamps his keyboard playing on the song as well - however not getting carried away with it. Just enough to throw in a little piano boogie here and there to keep things interesting.

10. Stranger in Town - Nice heavy punching guitar riff work from Vinnie Moore. Mid tempo song packed with power. Nice way to close out the disc.

One thing that really stands out as missing on THE VISITOR is Pete Way's bass playing. He wasn't available for the recording and his simple style of playing is somewhat missed. He's got that "Added X" ingredient and he tends to bring the heavier/punchy/punkier/faster type songs to the UFO table. So his absence is definately felt here and his usual 2 or 3 heavier songs are missing from the UFO formula. That doesn't mean the songs are bad here...just missing that rocking Pete Way imprint.

On the positve side of things...Vinnie Moore's playing is incredible. Vinnie sounds like he was the driving force and the fuel that brought the THE VISITOR to life. His presence is really felt across the board on all the songs. I like the blues and songs rooted in the blues, so I like what he brought to the table on this release. Good stuff! You may have noticed I used the words blues and boogie a number of times. That's because that's the dominant overall feel here. He really nails down some great guitar work all over the release.

I haven't really mentioned Andy Parker's drumming. He pretty much keeps it simple, doesn't do anything flashy or over the top and keeps his playing "in the pocket." His drums sound a little low in the mix to me in some places, but that's the only negative thing that can be said about the drums. I think if they brought the levels up in some places it could have really changed the overall dynamic or feeling of some parts of the songs.

What can be said about Phil Mogg? He's one of my favorite lyricists and vocalists of all time. I love how he throws some lyrics together that sometimes don't make sense, but when taken within the context of the song, they just sound like the words belong there. He doesn't disappoint here. Sometimes leaving you going "Huh?" but at the same time your head keeps bobbing and your foot keeps tapping so who cares what he's talking about? Right? It works and it sounds good. So that's fine with me.

Of the 3 releases since Vinnie Moore boarded the UFO mothership, I would sandwich this one between YOU ARE HERE and THE MONKEY PUZZLE, with THE VISITOR giving YOU ARE HERE a run for it's money. Not one of their best efforts, but on the flip side nowhere near one of their worst either. If you like mid tempo songs...heavy on the blues, you will like this. If you're looking for heavy Michael Schenker speeding guitar rhythms that are going to peel the paint off the walls, then dig into the UFO back catalog.

Fans of melodic, blues based, mid tempo melodic rock will like this. UFO fans will definatley want to add it to your collection. It may take a few listen throughs for it to grow on you. But, I think you will like most of these tracks. Overall, I think THE VISITOR is a pretty solid release. I would rate it somewhere in the neighboorhood of a 7 or 8 on a scale of 10. For a letter grade I would give it a B.

For more information check out www.spv.de You can check out some clips of all the tracks on the UFO page there. He's angry. He's mad. He's pissed...and he's a cummin' to guide you through the fine art of quenching your thirst and the bowels of rock and roll debauchery. What has made Sir-Loin-O-Beef's tampon string light up like a firecracker on the 4th of July? Why it's that good old "little band that could" out of Columbus, OH called American Dog. That's who! As always, they've delivered the goods ... lifted their leg and gave us another Golden spray upon our ears and eyes to mark their ever solid territory!

Sir-Loin-O-Beef serves as your host as he guides you through a 2 hour visual journey through the world of American Dog. Rose colored glasses be damned. In his eyes, he doesn't like the Dog and he tries his best to steer you clear of any danger the band might provoke.

So what doesn't he like about the band? It's more like...what is there to NOT like about the band? What you get here is a pretty comprehensive visual history of the band including rare live performances, videos, outtakes, and good times all around. All the hits are here from "Shitkicker", "Drank Too Much" to some more rarely performed songs like "Bullshit Goddammit" and "Be a Man" - the latter performed in the early days of the band at the legendary Alrosa-Villa in Columbus, Ohio. You also get a performance from a television appearance the band did in Paris, France as well as some live songs from across the big pond. Eric Moore of the Godz and Jason McMaster of Dangerous Toys stop by for a couple of cameo appearances on the dvd and you also get 3 videos the band has shot - "Workin' Man", "Rock-N-Roll Dog", and "Sometimes You Eat The Pussy". Keep yours eyes open for that last video as things aren't always what they seem. Great video! Meow.

If you want some bang for your buck, grab yourself a cold one and settle in for a 2 hour ride of non stop high octane entertainment from one of the most underrated bands in the world. This is way better than a night out at the movies or buying that new dvd movie that just came out. Well worth your hard earned cash and it goes to support a great band. Even Sir-Loin-O-Beef can't be denied the good times that emit from an American Dog experience. In the end, Sir-Loin-O-Beef is sporting yellow colored glasses and is gleefully dancing in the Golden rain of American Dog!

10 Golden puddles out of 10!

I've said it before and I'll say it again...American Dog is one of my favorite bands out there. Southern Blues Beer soaked Hard Rock at it's finest. If you never heard of the band, I highly recommend any of their cd releases as well as their new dvd ALL OVER THE ROAD VOL. 1. Head on over to www.americandog.us and pick up the new dvd and/or a cd or two and support real (and most importantly) good rock and roll! I promise you will not be disappointed.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3863837618875044922.post-25850877701672717112007-06-29T09:48:00.000-07:002007-06-29T11:26:47.265-07:00L.A. Guns
THE HOLLYWOOD YEARS LIVE AND LOADED
Deadline Musice

L.A. Guns have a new live dvd retrospective out (not to be confused with the live dvd they are selling on laguns.net) that takes you back to the days when the band was hungry and big hair, stilletto heals, and fishnet stockings were a staple of the late 80's music scene. The version of the band at the time consisted of the most popular version of L.A. Guns that the majority of music fans have come to known as the identifiable L.A. Guns - Phil Lewis singing, Tracii Guns and Mick Cripps slinging the guitars, Kelly Nickels on bass, and Steve Riley pounding the skins.

THE HOLLYWOOD YEARS consists of a full length show consisting of 10 songs that was shot in Philadelphia, PA while the band was out on the road supporting their debut release. Additional bonus footage includes 2 bonus live songs - "The Ballad of Jayne" and "Never Enough" and brand new interviews with all 5 band members who took the band to the upper ranks of the late 80's music scene.

The full length show from Philadelphia features every song from their self titled debut release and captures a moment in time when it appeared the band was on the cusp of breaking out big time. The band is playing before an arena audience on a big stage and they hit the stage running from beginning to end. It appeared that L.A. Guns were to follow in the footsteps of other L.A. bands and soon they would be headlining arenas across the world. However, with the arrival of grunge music, the carpet was pulled out from under the 80's rock bands and the band would see the big arena stage only one more time opening up for AC/DC in support of their third release HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES - they also had an opening slot for AC/DC to promote their self titled release. With that in mind, this live show is a great document from a great period of music when arena rock was king. Now you can relive that experience one more time and get a glimpse of when L.A. Guns were rookies and how they worked the big arena stages. I do have a complaint with the show and that complaint is that the quality of the show is a little under par. It looks like the recording is a high generation copy of the original recording. The reason why I say that is that I have this exact same show on video and my copy is really crisp, the colors are bright, and it's a perfect video. This one is dark and dull and may disappoint some people out there.

Quality is also an issue with the 2 bonus tracks - they appear to be dark and dull. "The Ballad of Jayne" is taken from a live show from the HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES tour and "Never Enough" is from a live show recorded during the brief reunion of this version of the band 8 years ago.

The big highlight of the dvd is the interview footage titled "The L.A. Guns Story". It features brand new interviews with each band member and some rare behind the scenes footage is shown between interview segments. What's great is that Mick takes a break from managing a retirement home and Kelly steps away from his computer to participate in the interviews. Both mantain a very low profile today. It's great to see them share their stories and reminisce about their days in the band. All of the interviews are honest and reveal alot of the innerworkings of the band. A few topics covered are how Kelly ended up doing the vocals on "Nothing Better to Do", how there was no money in the early days, Tracii and Mick's brotherhood relationship, and "The Ballad of Jayne" is about no one particular person and how Tracii never liked that song but got outvoted for it to appear on COCKED AND LOADED. Those are just a few of the stories to wet your appetite.

All in all, this is a good disc because it captures a fun moment in time that we might never see again for a band like L.A. Guns. The interviews are good and you get a good sense of what was going on in the minds of the band when they were climbing the rock and roll food chain. For those that like perfection in your live shows, you might want to avoid this. Die hard L.A. Guns fans will love it. However, it should be noted that the same Philadelphia show was available from L.A. Guns a number of years ago off of their website. In either case, the interview footage on the dvd is priceless and is a good enough reason for any fan to pick it up.

For more information on the current versions of L.A. Guns check out www.laguns.net (Phil and Steve) and www.lagunslive.com (Tracii's band)

For more information on Deadline Records and to see their latest releases check out www.cleopatrarecords.com/deadlineUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3863837618875044922.post-34463272799616598732007-06-07T06:29:00.000-07:002009-03-25T16:34:23.249-07:00Cleveland Rock and Roll Memories<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd75aaPRgVNx9jC4a_EfbcejF48jSlno7MOE6YjBmqALk-90OF4VBPEJZZCMMHuqqciyGrD3LPdC1VXq6NeKkfutrpt06D0TVkNXNGbmhEUJwU9mNeUkhwtOpXdf3gWjnhFmkd9Q2-jJk/s200/cleveland+rock+and+roll+memories+cover.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073315762613126498" />

There's a great book out now called Cleveland Rock and Roll Memories by Carlo Wolff. If you're from the North East Ohio area and grew up in the 60's, 70's, and 80's, this book is something you need to check out. It covers the local Cleveland music scene and focuses on the venues, bands, fans, media personalities, record stores, etc. from each decade. It's a blast from the past and features alot of photos and stories (told by the people who were part of the scene during their respective eras) from each era that will take you down memory lane - tons of photos of places and/or things that are nothing more than a distant memory. Well worth your hard earned cash. 10 out of 10 stars.

Published by Gray & Company Publishers

Check out Gray & Co's website below for more info.
www.grayco.comUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3863837618875044922.post-66897519378030785862007-04-20T08:06:00.000-07:002009-03-25T16:38:09.277-07:00Megadeth - Dave Mustaine Interview<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAL4j-Ly6gLJgw8fhbOt8Ua91IYSzwwiSRiVkYAqXeoar0X22ZZkTj9ISZ67CjyfS4JNVyHaZbyimGUwQJuLF9zEZ7hmE3PMeR6cAw8H0GaNGjfRhkfz6dBAipNSaR_vNl-3cun7MPpgE/s200/Mustaineragcovermay.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082306123669757378" />
Megadeth's new release titled UNITED ABOMINATIONS, due in stores May 15, picks up where the SYSTEM HAS FAILED and sees the band return to the classic sound that helped cement their place in the metal community. The 11 new tracks are a spit of venom combining the elements of thrash, melody, lots of guitar solos, gnarly vocals, and Dave Mustaine's thought invoking political lyrics. On a break from the Heaven and Hell tour, Dave Mustaine checked in to talk about the new release.

Mydenrocks - I love the intensity on the new cd. Did that intensity come out natural or did you gear your writing to high intensity material?
Dave Mustaine - I didn't go into making this record with any pre-conceived notions. I was just so dis-illusioned with the record business after what happened with Capitol and Sanctuary Records. After going over to Sanctuary, I thought "Hey..this is different. These guys undersand. They're metal people. My God they manage Iron Maiden." It ended up being more of the same difficulties I had with Capitol. Both labels had difficulties with the songs and issues with the songs that really couldn't be solved. Going over to Roadrunner and when we went in to do this record...so far it's been...there's been some ups and downs. I think alot of that translated into the intensity on the record. There was stuff that was going on in my personal life that even transcended the difficulties from working with a corporation. When you're trying to do something like create art, the nature of art if very un-corporate. Do you follow me? I'm not necessarily anti-corporate. When you're trying to pitch a song to a corporate entity, it's kind of like trying to explain an orgasm to a virgin. Both sides have different points of view. You can't really get an artist to think like a corporation, but it's automatically thought that you will think like a corporation by default. So some of the energy on the record is there because there was seemingly the same syndrome that has been the same with me the whole time I've been a recording artist. There's also a refreshment there that really excited me and fortunately for me all of the beuracratic stuff is out of the way. The art side is starting to show through. I'm really excited about what the future holds for me with the label and what my gift has been given to me about being able to play guitar and sing.

MR - Was there any comromising on the new songs or did you end up having 100 percent artistic freedom?
DM - Put it this way....there were decisions that I had made in the beginning stages that weren't resonating with me. When I had talked with the A&R person at the label, who was assigned to me, we were in agreement about alot of things that deep down I just didn't feel right about. I kept perservering though. We knew the songs had to be lyrically re-approached to properly convey what I was trying to say - if you confront an enemy head on, you're going to have a battle. But, sometimes, you have to come sweeping in from the flank in order to win. I had to use that same concept for several different points of view in order to get my ideas across lyrically. I would be doing a disservice to myself if I said I didn't have artistic freedom.

MR - Did the music and vocals come easy for you this time around? It seems like you've recaptured that classic Mustaine delivery.
DM - The music was super fun to do because I just figured "Ok Dave. You by far have alot more gas in the tank that you need to let people know about. So it's time to get it on!" I really wanted to challenge myself. There's going to be some songs that are going to be hard for me to play live and sing. Hopefully, no one will ever want to hear any of those songs live! (laughing) "Sleepwalker" was a little hard, in the beginning, to figure out because it was one of those polyrhythm kind of things over the down beats, upbeats, and vocals. With the cadence and the vocal lines, you want to growl a little bit and lure something out here and there. You know what I mean? That's just part of my style. I don't have a speach impediment. I just really get into character when I sing. Some people, when you try and do that, it comes really natural. Some people have to get it into their memory to pull it off. Some songs, I can do it one way and some songs I do it the latter way I described. As it turns out, "Sleepwalker" is a breeze now. But, 6 months later I'm still having trouble with "Washington Is Next!"

MR - The lyrics really point out things wrong with the world. Do you think your average person is going to let the lyrics sink in and develop their own opinions?
DM - I don't know if it's neccessarily wrong with the world. There's things that I think aren't just not neccessarily the best choice for us right now. I've always been politically active. There's alot of musicians who think it's ok to go out and bitch about the problem. But, I actually try to back it up and do something. I got involved with the Democratic National Convention in 1992 with MTV and Rock the Vote. Michael Stipe, Dwight Yokum, and myself - we were all working on the voter bill to get that passed into law. I felt that I did something for my country. For the most part, I think musicians bellyache about stuff and I think they need to either make it very clear how to do something about it or just shut up. I hope the lyrics stir something in the minds of the listener.

MR - Will we ever see a poitical tv show from you...kind of a Hannity/Colmes type show? Maybe Mustaine/Nugent? (laughing)
DM - You know what? I actually respect Ted. I was a big fan of his when I was starting guitar. He's a very intelligent person. He's a staunch Republican. Even though I have feelings on both sides of the political aisle, I just don't think I would want to say anything bad about or to him (laughing). He helped shape a generation when I was a kid. He's got some respect from me. Even if I disagreed with something that he said I would just be like "Ted! You're so right!" (laughing). I mean come on...he's Ted Nugent! I don't know if we would really have different views because alot of the stuff I've heard him say I agree with. I mean I love meat and potatoes too, but I'm not a hunter. Obviously, I've got a hunters instinct. But as far as hunting and stuff like that, I just don't think that I could eat anything that I've killed unless we were hunting a steak that was already cooked up nice and warm. (laughing). Then I would be right there with Ted! But, in reality you know what? I'm just not that guy who likes to get into arguments anymore. I'm not into getting into arguments with people because who wins? Even if I smoke them, which most people I do, what am I going to benefit from it? As much fun as show like that would be to do, it's never going to happen.

MR - Getting back to the new record...why did you decide to record this overseas?
DM - This is going to sound really corny. One of my favorite bands is Led Zeppelin. I don't really know how much longer I'm going to be able to play - let alone having people wanting to hear what I play. People fall out of favor real quickly in the music industry. People can be successful one day and then gone the next. I thought that, while I'm still able to afford this thanks to the fan support, I would like to be able to record in the countryside like Zeppelin did back in the day. When you hear people and they go record down in Trinidad or something like that, it's like (sarcastically) "Oh! I can see how inspired you're going to be! Oooohhh....look at my guitar and my sunburn!" You know what? I wanted to go to a place that was cold, hard, damp, and that had a very dark age feeling - like in mid evil times and that whole Tolkien kind of thing. I wanted to just get back to what the NWOBHM was 20 years ago. That's my style and it's one of the ingredients of my songwriting. I went to work and absorbed that atmosphere and it was electric. We used John Bonham's drum kit and we recorded in David Gilmour's house. It was a great place to get inspired.

MR - One of the tracks that surprised me is the remake of "A Tout Le Monde" with Christina Scabbia sharing vocal duties. Why did you decide to revisit this song?
DM - It actually surprised me too at how well it came out. We had 2 other girls audition, but in the end Christina was the perfect fit for my voice. It worked out really well I think. If you start with the original version and then go to the new version - listen to them back to back and song really climaxes with the new version. It's really hard to hear 2 songs back to back that have been remakes without finding some kind of discrepencies with them. The new version is a little faster, done a little heavier, the tone is definately better, the recording is better, the solo is a little longer, and the fact that there's so much more singing performance on it makes it a winner.

MR - Are you planning on breaking out alot of the new songs live once the record comes out?
DM - We don't even choose songs from a record to play live until after a record comes out. As it is right now we're playing "Washington Is Next!" and "Sleepwalker". We started playing those 2 songs live because before we went into the studio we wanted to do some work on them. We played them live a couple of times and they became popular, so they've stuck. Somebody had bootlegged "Washington Is Next!" and put it up on Youtube, so it got popular from that. "Sleepwalker" was a song we gave to our fanclub to give them a little tidbit of what was coming. We also played "Gears of War". But, "Gears of War" was something that was released intentionally as a demo for Microsoft's XBox Gears of War game. We had sponsorship from Microsoft and it was quite an honor to be working with them. We finished the song off because of that game. It didn't have lyrics for the game - it was just music. When Microsoft heard it, they loved and wanted it on the game. I thought it would be great. I said to our manager at the time "Tell them we'll write the lyrics and call it Gears of War". Microsoft said it was too late to get it in the game with lyrics, but we could do whatever we wanted to do with the song. I thought that was great of them and we finished off the song. It was really, really exciting being involved with an XBox game.

MR - What are you touring plans beyond the Heaven and Hell tour? Will you tour the states later in the year to really push the new release?
DM - We tentatively have dates booked for this summer over in Europe. July and August are off time unless one of those crazy things happend like "Hey! You want to do a song for the new James Bond movie?" If something crazy were to happen like that, we jump on it. Other than that though, we're just going to take some time off. We are looking at going back out in the states at some point. but, that's not confirmed yet because we've got the rest of the world to tour. So far all we've got on the books is Europe, but I would like to hit the South Pacific, South America, Africa, etc.

MR - What's your take on the current metal scene? I read your not too fond of some of the newer bands using loops, etc.
DM - There is use of pro tools on this record. I'm not going to say that on this record we didn't take advantage of the new techniques. Someone thought that I had recorded the new record on tape and I was like "Dude! I'm old, but not that old! Come on now..." I just think that it's really sad with bands that are capable of playing and they just get lazy. Especially, when it comes down to an epic part of a song and you can tell they could do it but they just don't do it. In certain circumstances, with anybody, if you have a part that's got a mistake and your stuff is packed up, you're doing the mix and notice a mistake - you have to correct the mistake. At that point, it's a given to do something where you drop in a note or a small loop to fix it. For the most part, I hear alot of these newer metal metal bands that heavily use looping and stuff like that. Thank God those bands are starting to go away. For me I think the beauty of metal is that it's a way of life. It's not something we've converted to - it's just that's who we are. The fans haven't changed that much except maybe their appearance. When I first started playing, you looked at all these guys who were wearing a denim vest and they would have all the names of all the bands they liked on there. That was pretty much enough to getting an MMPI (personality information) on them. It was easier to identify a metal fan back then.

MR - Don't take offense to this, but let's face it Megadeth had a downturn there for a few records and you lost some fans. However, after people get to hear UNITED ABOMINATIONS I think you will win those fans back and then some. You really nailed a homerun and this is the record Megadeth fans have been waiting on for along time.
DM - Thanks! I can respect what you're saying. I don't take offense to it at all. There was a decline after RISK and I know that. That's the nature of my career. There was another writer involved that was part of Megadeth and his manager was really trying to control the band. Ultimately, it cost him his partnership with his partner, cost him his relationship with Megadeth, and broke up a great lineup. Hopefully, the metal fans will like this. This is a true Megadeth record.

MR - Thanks Dave for checking in with us. Good luck with the new record and tour! I'll see you in Cleveland. Is there anything you want to add?
DM - Thank you for the interview. I have family from the state of Ohio and I don't think alot of people know that. My fathers side is from Lima and Dayton respectively. I love the state of Ohio. In a really kind of weird way, whenever I see someone and they say they're from Ohio, it gives me fond memories of my dad. With that in mind, I really enjoy playing Ohio because it feels great to be back there...almost like I'm sort of coming home. I'm looking forward to the Cleveland show and I thank all of the fans out there for all of their years of support. It's truly appreciated. Don't be a stranger. Look me up on May 11th.

Be sure to pick up UNITED ABOMINATIONS when it comes out on May 11 on Roadrunner Records. Rather than doing that, the Los Angeles based band The Exies regrouped, took the experience as a learning curve, and found that their is light at the end of a dark tunnel. That positive shining light is their new cd titled A MODERN WAY OF LIVING WITH THE TRUTH, which comes out on May 8.

What appeared to be a promising career was cut short, when suddenly, the band found the carpet ripped out from under them. The problems for the band started when their previous label decided to not pick up the option for another release. The problems then snowballed when 2 of their members quit. From there you could almost say they almost slipped into a deep depression - questioning everything about life and where everything went wrong. However, that experience and how they dealt with that dark period is the lyrical content that makes up their new release.

Locked, loaded, and rejuvenated - prepare for a sonic shotgun blast to the senses. The Exies have re-emerged with a release that packs alot of punch. Compared to the old material, the new material has alot more "musical muscle" added to the bone of their previous efforts. The songwriting has matured and the group has incorporated alot of their influences into their recipe of creating songs - everything from new hard rock bands to older rock bands is thrown into the mix. The lyrics are thought provoking and the music is just as heavy as the lyrics. Mix in the melodic overtones of some of the songs and A MODERN WAY OF LIVING WITH THE TRUTH is a release full of songs that will bridge the gap between the younger rock audience and the older rock audience. Consider it like this - The Exies are a battery. The younger rock crowd is the negative wire and the older crowd is the positive wire. Once those 2 hotwires connect to the battery that is The Exies, the engine is going to fire up on all cylanders and explode The Exies into mainstream popularity.

Scott Stevens (lead vocals, guitar), Freddy Herrera (bass, vocals), Chris Skane (guitar, vocals), and Hoss (drums) are out on the road now getting an early jump start to promoting the new releases. Check their website for tour dates for a show near you. Band co-founder Freddy Herrera checked in from the road to talk about the band and the new release.

Mydenrocks - It's like everything gelled and came together just right - the songwriting and production is really a step up from your previous efforts. From top to bottom, there isn't a sleeper track on the new release. Any thoughts?
Freddy Herrera (FH) - We worked really, really hard. I don't know what it was. I guess it's the whole thing of struggling and paying your dues - being in pain and what's going on in your life that makes you create great art. I never really believed that before. But, now after going through that low point the band went through, I kind of believe it's true now.

MR - Would you consider the new cd almost a concept record in that there is a running theme of dealing with life throughout the whole cd?
FH - Almost. I think the reason people may get that is because the songs are so focused and there's a sound that's going on for what we shot for. It might seem like there is a deeper thing - and that thing is just growing and building yourself up to not be afraid of things that are coming or what you're dealt with.

MR - Let's back up a minute. What happened with your previous label Virgin Records?
FH - Virgin is such a big company. God bless 'em. They did everything they could for us. Miscommunication was a big problem there. We can't fault them because they did alot of stuff for us. When it came down to the fine tuning and making stuff right - alot of things got lost in the shuffle. They decided to not pick up the option for another cd. Being such a big label you have to sell alot of copies just to break even.

MR - The reason I brought that up is because you have a new label Eleven Seven Music and a new management company. Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue shares the same management and I know he has been a big supporter of The Exies. Did he have anything to do with setting you up with your new deal and management?
FH - Yeah. He was the one who introduced us to Allen Kovac - our new manager. Nikki had a talk with Scott and was asking if we were really happy at Virgin and our management. Scott told him things could always be better. So Nikki set up a meeting where we met Allen and we just really hit it off. Nikki saw something in us. We were so fortunate to go on tour with Motley Crue because so many good things came out of it.

MR - That tour exposed you to a different rock crowd, which was good because the Breaking Benjamin (one of the bands The Exies have toured with in the past) type crowd isn't the same crowd that would be going to see Motley Crue and vice versa...
FH - I have to admit..to be totally honest with you...we were a little afraid because we know those walls that exist too. We wondered if it would be right to play with bands that had different followings. We said "screw it" because we couldn't pass up an oppurtunity to tour with somebody as legendary as Motley Crue. It worked out great because their fans were really receptive to us. We learned a big lesson that way - to not be afraid to play with somebody no matter what you do. Because, if you're good they're going to get it.

MR - It has to feel good having someone in your corner supporting the band like Nikki.
FH - The new record is really a miracle in itself. We went through 2 guys leaving and the record company not picking up the option. We had everybody step up. I don't think we really ever realized how many friends we had and how many favors people were willing to do for us. I can't even begin to list the favors. All the way down to our producer going out and doing 6 weeks of basically finishing the record for free - just because he wanted the record to come out right. Allen went the extra mile and making sure he let us do our own thing and having alot of faith in us. The list goes on and on from there.

MR - Back to the new release...it's tough for me to single out any single track as being better than any of the rest because I literally like them all. What are a few of your favorites?
FH - I'm really happy that we went with "Different Than You" - just because it's such a bouncy and upbeat thing. I really like the message it's saying. "Stray" is really big with me because it has such a huge sound. I love the total recklass abandonment of "Lay Your Money Down" - that just kills and it's really great to play live.

MR - Are you working alot of the new songs into the live set? How has the response been to the new material since it's in a little different direction than your previous songs?
FH - Oh yeah. We're only playing 3 songs from our old records. We're really proud of this new record - not that we're not of the old songs. We really want to let people know that this is what we're really about and the response has been nothing but positve from the fans.

MR - I respect that fact that you're playing alot of new material. It gets kind of boring when you see a band numerous times and each time they might only drop 1 or 2 new songs in there.
FH - That's cool that you like that. I think part of the fear that some bands have of playing mostly new stuff is that they want to please their audience. Alot of people just like to hear stuff they know. I guess it also depends on how many hits you have!

MR - Why did you decide to cover "These Are the Days" for the new one?
FH - We thought that Scott's take on the song was so good and so original that it needed to be heard. I thought it was amazing how he turned what David Byrne wrote in the song and shined a different light on the lyrics. I wasn't a big fan of the Talking Heads. I never listened to the lyric and what was being said. But, now that I hear the lyrics I'm like "That's a really heavy song".

MR - How are the new band members adjusting?
FH - Chris is loving it. (Chris was actually in The Exies early on in their career) Hoss has been on tour before. He played last summer with Nick Oliveri (Queens of the Stone Age) in a band called Mondo Generator. Nick called Hoss up to play all the drums on the record and then he called and asked him to play all the European festivals last summer. Both of them are immensly enjoying this.

MR - Thanks for checking in with us!
FH - No problem. Hopefully, everyone will open up and give the new record a chance. We're really happy with it and I think there's something there for everyone. Our live show is alot of high energy rock and roll and if anyone can make it out to check us out - please come...we won't disappoint!

For more information on The Exies log onto www.the-exies.com and www.myspace.com/theexiesUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3863837618875044922.post-88798764909957777252007-03-19T21:18:00.000-07:002007-03-19T21:27:58.110-07:00Dirty Little Secrets of the Record Business - Why So Much Music You Hear SucksSomeone had to stand up and cry out from the mountaintop why the music that you hear on the radio today stinks. I finally got a copy of it and all I can say is "Wow!". This is like a smack in the face that you weren't expecting. The first release from this American Idol contestant is surging towards two million units sold after rocketing to one million units sold faster than any other rock artist for their debut release according to sales based on Soundscan. For the record I want to state that I'm not jumping on any bandwagons here. When I first heard that Chris was going to be releasing his own cd, my first thought was "Oh great. Here we go with the whole corporate spin and marketing him by doing whatever it takes to sell records and please the sheep." Even though this is backed by a major label it is anything and everything other than a corporate product. For starters, I thought the label would bring in songwriting teams and basically make Chris their vehicle for the music that the label thought would sell. Thank God the label didn't stick their noses in this release as Chris wrote or either co-wrote 10 of the 12 tracks on here. His tracks show a certain songwriting maturity not seen by any of the other American Idol contestants and the sales prove it. The songwriting is a great mix of blues based rock songs with a modern edge to them. This is sure to please any fan of the rock genre.

The opening track "It's Not Over" has been well received at radio and was the initial spark that sent this release into orbit. The swaying and swaggering vocal melodies really drive home this mid tempo rocker. This was co-written by Chris with a group of writers, which inclued his former American Idol contestant - Ace Young. The biggest slam dunk on here is a song Chris wrote himself "Home". This is a song of epic proportions that, with it's slow buildup to the emotionally hitting chorus, launches the mood level to a stratospheric level that is sure to burn into your mind and become a song that sticks with you forever - a hit song that you can look back ten years from now and remember a specific moment from when this song was popular. "Over You" is another solid song that is right up there with the strongest Creed or Nickelback material - really catchy lyrics sung over great melodies. Move over Creed and Nickelback because there's a new powerhouse in town. "What I Want" is a riff based and fast paced dirty rocker fueled by the guitar work of none other than Slash. I bet Slash was wishing he had this song all to himself. It's a song with alot of balls and probably would be the heaviest song if it were to appear on Velvet Revolver's cd. "There and Back" has an underlying fast paced funky bass line that is the backbone of the song. It's another heavy hitting song and it's one of those songs you would turn to 10 while driving in your car.

Even though this cd came out at the tail end of 2006, if I had to put together my favorite releases of 2007 right now - DAUGHTRY would be number 1. The release has a great flow and you won't be skipping over any tracks. It rocks and rocks hard from beginning to end - some songs having the fast in-your-face type approach and other tracks have that slow churning power of a flow of molten steel eating up everything in its way. I think Chris Daughtry has the ability to lose the American Idol tag eventually. The intitial sales of DAUGHTRY were obviously fueled by the American Idol fans. However, I believe that after the hard core anti-American Idol rock crowd sinks their teeth into this, it's going to strike a nerve with them and drive this thing through the roof. If I really like a cd, I'll tend to go with a 8 or 9 rating. For DAUGHTRY I would give this one a 9 and a sidebar that states "Really damn close to a 10!"

For more information log onto www.daughtryofficial.com and www.rcarecords.com
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3863837618875044922.post-49656951980163485712007-03-16T08:51:00.000-07:002007-03-16T08:53:53.850-07:00Unwritten Law - The Hit List cd review

Unwritten Law
THE HIT LIST
2 AM Distribution

What we have here is a greatest hits package of re-recorded songs all spit, shined, and polished up with two new songs thrown in for good measure. I'm not big on re-recorded songs, but I understand the need for bands to do it and I'll describe that here in a minute. This batch of songs is actually pretty good compared to alot of the other re-recorded songs I've heard from various bands.

Punk rock veterans Unwritten Law acheived success with their previous record labels. However, that success didn't translate to fatter wallets for the band and it is a story that is told over and over by various bands. So, rather than slave away for another label, Unwritten Law decided to start their own label and THE HIT LIST is their first release on their new label.

Like I said earlier all of the hits are re-recorded songs. The reason why bands re-record their own material is because their former labels won't give up the master recordsings - even if the bands want to buy their own material back. The labels hold on to the masters in order to bleed every song for every penny it's worth. The labels do this buy constantly re-packaging greatest hits compilations and releasing them under different titles to throw off the consumers. Your die hard fans see through this garbage and avoid these releases. However, your casual fan will pick these up on impulse and they don't get anything new. These hits compilations put out by the label don't have to have the permission of the bands either since the label owns the master recordings. Now that we have that cleared up - let's see how THE HIT LIST stacks up.

The hits are obvious - songs like "Celebration Song" and "Up All Night" are good examples of the of the great heavy driving songs on here. Unwritten Law kind of touches on different styles of punk - such is the case with the Blink 182 flavored "Save Me". "She Says" is acoustic during the verses and erupts into rocking chaos during the chorus. One of my favorite Unwritten Law tracks is "Seein' Red" it's a great rhythmic song with a catchy vocal hook. Speaking of the hook, the band has mastered the art of writing catchy hooks that are memorable. Mix that with their infectious grooves and vocals and THE HIT LIST is a great cd worthy of picking up. The re-recordings actually sound better - better production work and a more beefier sound and not that "tin can" sound that some of these previous recordings had.

Now the real highlight of this disc is the song "Shoulda Known Better". This song is receiving some heavy airplay and could possibly rocket Unwritten Law to another level. It has all of the ingredients (hooks, infectious grooves, and vocals) all coming together cohesively to create a memorable song. The other new song "Welcome to Oblivion" quite possibly could also get as much radio airplay as "Shoulda Known Better". It's a bit toned down in the verses but picks up the beat as it breaks into a great drawn out mid-tempo vocal chorus. If these two new songs are any indication, I can wait for their next studio release. The band has really matured and have become great songwriters.

Now for an interesting twist on THE HIT LIST. Upon hearing that Unwritten Law were releasing a greatest hits package, one of their former labels rushed out one of those greatest hits compilations that I mentioned earlier to try to beat Unwritten Law to the store shelves. THE HIT LIST is the cd you should pick up - you get more bang for your buck and the recordings actually sound better. What I love about this situation is that as the hype builds over this release, it's like Unwritten Law is slowly throwing a middle finger towards their former labels and the business side of the music industry. The more the success they achieve, the higher the middle finger goes!

This is a disc that I think can span different genres of rock. Whether you're into punk, rock, pop rock, hard rock, open up your minds and give this cd a chance. I think you will like what you hear. It's a great cd and it's one that won't end up in my trade in pile. I give this cd 9 middle fingers out of 10 middle fingers!

Unwritten Law's THE HIT LIST is out now. That scene has long been dead and instead of your local band playing to a club packed with 700 people, local bands are lucky to pull in 100 people. There is a great cd that has just been released that captures that local band scene of the 80's and early 90's. The cd is called LEHIGH VALLEY ROCKS THE BEST OF 1984-1994. It's 2 cds containing 30 songs of the popular local bands of the Lehigh Valley, PA region. You don't have to be from that region though to truly appreciate the impact of the music on this cd. The hard rock music of that era is gift wrapped here for you for you to experience and if you like that music from then, you're going to love this. The cd booklet is top notch, glossy and has a paragraph containing a bio and a picture of every band on the disc. A proper cd review will follow. I just wanted to get the word out there on this cd asap. Don Dokken checked in with us to discuss the new releases and what the future holds for Dokken. This will be the first installment of somewhat regular updates from Don leading up to the new studio release LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN.

Mydenrocks - So you literally stumbled across the tapes for the new FROM CONCEPTION LIVE cd?
Don Dokken - We store all of our master tapes at a vault in Hollywood. They are temperature controlled so they don't go bad. I was down looking for the master tapes from the German recordings of BREAKING THE CHAINS to do a remix for a 25th anniversary. I saw some old faded boxes with 2 inch tapes that just said "Dokken Live". I didn't really know what it was because they're were really no other markings on them. So, I took them with me, put them on the machine and found they were old recordings from way back when.

MR - How much other unreleased material is stored in the Dokken vaults?
DD - That's it. We got masters, etc. There's nothing unreleased in there. Everything has been released from what I could see. I actually looked through the tapes, but unfortuantely these new live tapes were it.

MR - The quality of FROM CONCEPTION is pretty good considering the condition they were in when you first found them. Was it hard to get the sound to come back to life and make it sound so good?
DD - It was alot of work, but it really wasn't that hard. Wyn Davis mixed it, who has done alot of Dokken albums in the past. We just transferred it to digital and got rid of all the ticks and pops. It came out sounding good.

MR - Who actually plays bass on the new live release?
DD - It's Pilson. Pilson is playing bass. He had just joined the band about a month before. Juan didn't even play on BREAKIN' THE CHAINS. His picture is on there, but he didn't play on BREAKIN' THE CHAINS. Peter Baltes, the bass player from Accept played on BREAKIN' THE CHAINS because Juan was in the U.S. and couldn't get to Germany in time to do the bass tracks. So Peter played on the tracks. Then Juan came to Germany did the European tour and the Beat Club show, then came back to the U.S. did like 1 or 2 showcases and got the record deal. But, then Juan left the band to join Ratt. Pilson joined right after Juan left and that's when these tapes for the new live release were recordeed.

MR - Why did you decide to release FROM CONCEPTION now and just not hold on to it for a later date?DD - We signed a deal with Rhino for a new studio album and I just said to them "Hey I got this old live recording that's kind of cool. You should check it out." I gave it to them and they were like "We should put this out for the Dokken catalog because it's a pretty good recording." I said "Yeah, that would be good to hold us over until we get the new studio album done." There's a big gap - it's been 2 1/2 years since we put out HELL TO PAY. So, it's about time we put out some product. It was perfect to release FROM CONCEPTION and the dvd at the same time.

MR - You're probably happy to get the UNCHAIN THE NIGHT dvd out for the first time in that format?
DD - It took a long time. Elektra didn't want to release it. They thought there was no point in putting it out because they said nobody wants to buy it - nobody cares. I said "I disagree"

MR - I heard some rumours about releasing the Dokken back catalog?
DD - I don't know anything about that. They're putting out some heavy metal compilation on Rhino that I think we're going to have one song on. Maybe that compilation thing is what you were hearing about.

MR - Do you have a target release date for the new studio release LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN?
DD - We wanted to put out in June. But, it doesn't look like we're going to make it. Like all albums they always take longer than you expect. It looks like it will be out late summer or Sept. at the latest. We've already booked the European tour starting in Sept. and then we'll do the U.S. tour right after that.

MR - Any particular songs stand out to you for the new studio release that you would like to give a little advance on?
DD - No song titles yet. I haven't even titled the songs yet. (laughing). I got the music. I got the lyrics. In about a month I should have some pretty concrete titles to throw out there. It's hard to describe the music without matching it up to a song name. So, no one will know what we're talking about anyhow. As far as the sound as a whole for the new material, I would say it's good hard rocking music that is in the veign of the classic Dokken sound.

MR - Where does your solo cd stand right now? Any release date planned?
DD - Nowhere apparantley. I finished it. It's done. I gave it to a few labels. Alot of people don't get the solo cd. They don't get the songs. They think it's too mellow and there's no market for it. It's a different kind of music. It's new age. It's different. It's not signed to a label yet. I'm really proud of the record. I just have to find the right label to put it out on. A rock label is not the way to go with it.

MR - Do you look at the new studio release as a make or break it type milestone for the band? If it doesn't sell, will that mean an end to Dokken?
DD - It is a make or break it album. If this album doesn't have some success, then I don't know what to say. We got great label. They're marketing it, promoting it, doing whatever they can. If it doesn't sell, then what's the point in making new cds? I won't disband the band if it doesn't sell. But we'll just stop making new records and be like Poison - we'll go out on tour every year and just play our hits.

MR - Hopefully, it does well. The whole music industry is just a mess when it comes to promotion and selling a rock product. It's almost like people who should know how to market, promote, and sell rock music don't even know how to hit a target audience anymore. Look at Cleveland for example, rock radio is just pathetic. I'm embarressed to call Cleveland the rock and roll capital anymore. It's a pathetic shell of what it once used to be and you basically have these large corporations that control the whole industry. The end result is bands like Dokken get shut out of radio airplay, venues to play, etc.
DD - The record business is so screwed up right now. It's a mess. There's no more rock radio stations. People don't how to market anymore and that's why the record companies are going down the toilet. No one wants to play in Cleveland anymore because they don't sell tickets there.

MR - Has Wild Mick and Barry ever come back from a Ted Nugent tour sporting loin cloths? They ever come back with some good stories?
DD - (laughing) No. No loin cloths. That's funny. But, you can imagine - it's Ted Nugent! They've come back with some stories. Oh yeah. But, they're stories I can't repeat. You don't want to get on Ted's bad side - don't be a rabbit! Ted will put an arrow right through you!

MR - Thanks for checking in with us Don!
DD - In about a month from now, we'll catch back up. I'll have more songs to talk about, a more solid release date, etc. Until then, check out the new releases and thanks for the support!

For more information check out...
www.dokken.net
www.dondokken.com
www.rhino.com

Also, be sure to catch the Classic Metal Show on Sat. The first in the line of releases is titled FROM CONCEPTION LIVE 1981 and it hits the store shelves March 13. This is one of the earliest Dokken shows recorded before they ever had a record deal. This is the classic Dokken lineup on the release - Don Dokken, Mick Brown, George Lynch, and Jeff Pilson. Don Dokken accidently stumbled across the tapes while digging through the Dokken archives and he had to rescue them from mold damage. This is truly a goldmine for any Dokken fan.

The release consists of 10 tracks showcasing a band that was tearing up the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, CA circa 1981. Dokken was hungry and you can definately tell by the aggressiveness of the music here. The setlist consists of 6 songs from the BREAKING THE CHAINS release, 3 unreleased songs, and a guitar solo showcasing the abilities of George Lynch before he became a guitar hero within music circles. It's not "Mr. Scary" but it's what you would expect to see at a live show - lots of weeedly, weeedly, weeedly guitar work.

If you're a fan of the classic Dokken lineup, you will be interested in the 3 unreleased songs. My personal favorite is the song "Goin' Down". All I can say is "Why was this never on a Dokken release?" This is a high octane fueled song that moves like a dragster roaring down the strip. Musically imagaine an uptempo/slamming bass and drum rhythm mixed with shredding guitar work - mix that with Don Dokken's melodic vocals and this is a real hidden gem within this release. "Hit and Run" has a mid-tempo galloping groove that is the backbone of the song and there is some interesting vocals where Don switches from a relaxed singing style within the verses to hitting the drawn out and melodic high notes come chorus time. We also get to hear backing vocals from the band that grab your ear. The last unreleased track "Liar" is straight ahead in your face rock that has all the signatures of the classic Dokken song.

Other song highlights on FROM CONCEPTION are the obvious ones - "Paris""Breakin' the Chain""In the Middle" and "Night Rider". Quality wise the sound is incredible for a show that happened over 25 years ago. The recording doesn't sound dated like alot of live recordings from that era. It actually sounds like the show was recorded last week and is definately not what I expected to hear becasue the original tapes were in such poor condition. Great production work on every track.

This is an absolute must have for any fan of Dokken or a fan of that scene and/or genre that Dokken is part of. You will not be disappointed. Put this at the top of your wish list. I give this 8 weeedly guitar notes out of 10.

FROM CONCEPTION LIVE 1981will be out this coming Tues. March 13. Also, on that date Dokken will also release a dvd - UNCHAIN THE NIGHT, which is a reissue of the vhs title of the same name - unreleased videos and new interviews with the band are added to the original release.

For more information check out...
www.dokken.net
www.dondokken.com
www.rhino.com
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
